An Invitation to Solitude, Silence & Prayer
So much of our lives is spent doing, responding, caring, and carrying the expectations of others. In the midst of it all, finding space to simply be can feel increasingly difficult.
What might become possible if we gave ourselves permission to step away from the noise and listen a little more deeply?
Inspired by Henri Nouwen's The Way of the Heart, this contemplative morning will explore three practices at the heart of Nouwen's writing: solitude, silence, and prayer. Together, we'll consider how these practices can help us move beneath the roles and responsibilities we carry and become more attentive to God's presence in our lives.
Throughout the morning, Gavin will guide us through short reflections, periods of personal solitude, Centering Prayer, journaling, and Circle Way conversations rooted in deep listening. Rather than simply talking about contemplative practice, we'll give ourselves time to experience it and notice what unfolds when we slow down.
A Retreat Wherever You Are
This gathering is offered as a hybrid contemplative retreat, with the opportunity to participate in person at Retreat House or online from wherever you are. Those gathering at Retreat House will have the House and grounds available for periods of solitude and reflection. If you're joining online, you'll be invited to create your own retreat space at home and step away from the screen during periods of individual practice.
We'll come together throughout the morning for teaching, prayer, and conversation, while also allowing space for silence and solitude. As our time concludes, we'll reflect on what we're carrying with us and explore simple, sustainable ways to weave solitude, silence, and prayer into the rhythms of everyday life.
Whether you spend much of your life caring for others, serving in ministry, carrying responsibilities at work or home, or simply longing for a little more stillness, this morning offers a place to pause, listen, and remember that you are more than what you do. No previous experience with Centering Prayer or other contemplative practices is necessary. Come as you are, with curiosity and a willingness to be present.
