Questions to Ask a Spiritual Director

Finding a spiritual director is much like beginning any meaningful relationship. Credentials and training matter, but so do trust, connection, and a sense that you can be fully yourself in the conversation.

It can feel intimidating to reach out to someone for the first time. You may wonder whether you should have your questions prepared, know exactly what you're looking for, or already understand how spiritual direction works.

The truth is, your first conversation is simply an opportunity to get to know one another.

You are not only discovering whether a guide is right for you. They are also discerning how they might best accompany you. Like any healthy relationship, spiritual direction begins with mutual curiosity and a willingness to listen.

There Is No Perfect Spiritual Director

One of the most common misconceptions is that there is one "right" spiritual director for everyone.

In reality, every guide brings their own life experience, spiritual formation, personality, and way of listening. Some are deeply rooted in Christian contemplative traditions. Others have experience accompanying people from a wide variety of faith backgrounds or those who simply describe themselves as spiritual seekers.

Rather than searching for the "best" spiritual director, consider looking for someone whose presence helps you feel safe, heard, and invited to be honest.

Questions You Might Ask

Your first conversation doesn't need to feel like an interview, but it can be helpful to ask a few questions that help you understand how a guide approaches their work.

You might begin with questions like:

  • How would you describe spiritual direction?

  • What drew you to become a spiritual director?

  • Can you tell me a little about your own spiritual journey?

  • What traditions or perspectives have shaped your practice?

  • Who do you typically accompany?

  • What does a typical session look like?

  • How often do people usually meet with you?

  • Do you meet in person, online, or both?

  • What are your fees and scheduling policies?

These questions aren't about finding the "right" answers. They're simply an invitation to begin a conversation.

Questions to Ask Yourself

Choosing a spiritual director is also an opportunity to notice your own experience.

After your conversation, you might spend a few moments reflecting on questions like:

  • Did I feel listened to without being rushed?

  • Was I comfortable being myself?

  • Did I feel respected, even when I didn't have clear answers?

  • Could I imagine trusting this person over time?

  • Did our conversation leave me feeling more grounded, curious, or hopeful?

Sometimes our bodies recognize safety before our minds do. Paying attention to how you feel after the conversation can be just as important as anything that was said.

Trust Takes Time

It's important to remember that you don't need to know after one meeting whether you've found your spiritual director for life.

Like any meaningful relationship, trust develops over time. Many people find that after two or three conversations, they have a much better sense of whether the relationship feels like a good fit.

It's also okay to recognize that someone may not be the right guide for you. A healthy spiritual director understands this and wants you to find the companion who best supports your journey.

What Matters Most

People often assume they're looking for someone with the most experience or the most impressive résumé.

While training and experience certainly matter, they are not the heart of spiritual direction.

More important is finding someone who listens with compassion, asks thoughtful questions, respects your own spiritual journey, and creates a space where you can explore your life honestly and without judgment.

The right spiritual director won't try to become the center of your journey. Instead, they will gently help you pay closer attention to the wisdom, grace, and sacred presence already unfolding within your own life.

A Gentle Reflection

Before reaching out to a spiritual director, take a few quiet moments to consider:

  • What am I hoping for in this season of my life?

  • What questions have been quietly following me?

  • What kind of companion would help me listen more deeply?

You don't need to have all the answers before beginning. Sometimes the first step in spiritual direction is simply becoming honest about the questions you carry.
