What Happens During a Spiritual Direction Session?

For many people, the first spiritual direction session feels a bit like stepping into unfamiliar territory.

You may wonder what you'll talk about, whether you should prepare in advance, or if there's a "right" way to participate. The good news is that spiritual direction is much simpler—and much more spacious—than most people expect.

There is no script to follow, no spiritual test to pass, and no expectation that you arrive with everything figured out. Instead, a spiritual direction session offers something increasingly rare: an hour set aside simply to pay attention to your life.

Beginning with Your Story

Most sessions begin with a simple question:

"How have you been?"

From there, the conversation unfolds naturally. You might share something that's been weighing on your heart, a recent experience that has stayed with you, a question you've been carrying, or even a moment of unexpected joy.

Some people arrive with a clear topic they want to explore. Others simply begin talking about their week and discover, together with their spiritual director, what seems to hold the most meaning. There is no pressure to have an agenda. Your life itself becomes the starting place.

Listening Together

One of the most distinctive aspects of spiritual direction is that the conversation is guided by listening rather than advice.

Your spiritual director isn't there to solve problems or tell you what decisions to make. Instead, they listen carefully to your story, noticing themes, questions, emotions, or moments that might otherwise be overlooked. They may ask thoughtful questions, invite silence, or gently reflect back what they're hearing.

Often, what seems ordinary at first begins to reveal something deeper.

A recurring dream.

A conversation you can't stop thinking about.

A feeling you haven't quite named.

A moment in nature that unexpectedly moved you.

These are the places where spiritual direction often lingers—not because they need to be analyzed, but because they may be inviting your attention.

Making Space for Silence

Unlike many conversations, spiritual direction isn't afraid of silence.

There may be moments when both you and your guide simply sit quietly for a minute or two. Rather than being awkward, these pauses often become some of the most meaningful moments of the session. Silence allows us to notice what words alone cannot always express.

In a world filled with constant noise and immediate responses, making space for quiet reflection can feel both unfamiliar and deeply restorative.

Prayer and Spiritual Practices

Some sessions include prayer or a contemplative practice, while others do not. This depends on your own spiritual tradition, comfort level, and the relationship you've developed with your guide.

A spiritual director may invite a brief time of silence, a guided reflection, a passage of sacred reading, or another contemplative practice if it seems helpful. These are always offered as invitations, never expectations.

At Retreat House, our guides accompany people from many different faith backgrounds and spiritual traditions. We believe spiritual direction is most meaningful when it honors the unique journey of each person.

There Is No Need to Perform

Perhaps the greatest surprise for many people is realizing they don't need to be "good" at spiritual direction.

You don't need impressive spiritual experiences.

You don't need to know how to pray.

You don't need to arrive with profound insights.

You simply bring your life as it is.

The joys.

The questions.

The disappointments.

The hopes.

Everything is welcome.

What Happens After the Session?

Spiritual direction doesn't end when the conversation is over.

Many people notice that they leave feeling a little more grounded, a little more attentive, and a little more aware of what has been quietly unfolding beneath the surface of their daily lives.

Sometimes a session brings clarity. Other times it simply offers a question to carry into the weeks ahead. Both are gifts.

Rather than trying to solve your life in a single conversation, spiritual direction helps cultivate a different way of living—one that is rooted in attentiveness, curiosity, and trust.

Every Relationship Is Unique

No two spiritual direction relationships look exactly alike.

Some people meet monthly for years. Others seek spiritual direction during a particular season of discernment or transition. Some conversations are filled with laughter, while others make room for grief or uncertainty.

What remains constant is the commitment to creating a space where your story is received with compassion and where the movements of your inner life can be explored without judgment or hurry.

A Place to Begin

If you're considering spiritual direction for the first time, you don't need to know exactly what you're looking for before you begin.

Often, the first session is simply an opportunity to meet a guide, share a little of your story, and discover whether the relationship feels like a good fit. Like any meaningful companionship, trust grows over time.

At Retreat House, our network of trained spiritual directors and compassionate guides offers a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and spiritual perspectives. We'd be honored to help you find someone who can accompany you with wisdom, presence, and care.
