Prompts
What if spiritual direction were a soup or a cake? What would the ingredients be? What is the “recipe?” How is cooking a metaphor for spiritual direction?
How is your spiritual life like a walk in nature? Is it a level path through a local park? Is it a sojourn in a hammock in a beautiful garden or a shady arbor? Are you climbing Mount Everest?
When you are in a funk, how can creativity pull you into a better place? Have you tried a journal rant? Painted furiously? Try it! What is the process like?
What is your secret dream to be wild, to be creative? Have you taken any steps, in private or publicly, to manifest this dream? If not, why not? If so, how is it going?
They say God is in the details. What if God is in the wild, the spontaneous, the unplanned? What would that be like? Or what is that like for you if you experience God amid chaos?
Is it possible to live without creativity? Why or why not? What are the benefits and drawbacks of each way of life? What would life be like if we erased all evidence of creative expression?
Practices
Find a random image on Google images, Pixabay, Pexels, or Canva. Print it out and sit with this image. Why did this image speak to you? What is the call to action embedded in this image? How can this image spark creativity in you. (This is a version of visio divina.)
Find a song you’ve never listened to on Spotify or YouTube. Listen to the words. What emotions are evoked? What words or phrases jump out at you? Write them down. If there is a video component, which images speak to you? Listen again with your eyes closed and let your mind wander. What arises? What wants to be written? (This is a version of audio divina.)
Find an object in your house or your yard. Feel the texture, examine this object. Hold this object with your eyes closed. Can you feel it’s energy. What story does this object want to tell you? (This is a version of physio divina. Yes I made that up!)
