Writing the Four Elements: Prompts for Our December Book

The four elements could offer four doorways into the wild within, moving from what your body knows to what your imagination wants to explore. Invite writers to follow whichever meaning the element holds for them; these associations are starting places.

Earth — The wildness of the body
Beneath expectations about how you should look, move, work, or behave, your body has its own rhythms and instincts. What does it hunger for? What does it refuse? Write about a bodily knowing you have learned to override—and what might happen if you listened.

An opening: “Before I learned to be good, my body knew…”

Air — The wildness of thought and imagination
What question, possibility, or dream keeps moving through you, even when you try to dismiss it? Give it room to wander without requiring it to be sensible, useful, or achievable. Where does it take you?

An opening: “If I let my mind go where it wants…”

Water — The wildness of feeling and longing
What feeling or longing have you learned to hold back because it seemed too much, too tender, or inconvenient? Imagine giving it a voice. What does it want you to know? What does it ask of you?

An opening: “The longing I rarely name is…”

Fire — The wildness of desire and power
What in you wants to create, speak, protect, change, or claim something? Perhaps it appears as delight, anger, conviction, or a persistent spark. Write about that fire: what feeds it, and what would you like to do with its warmth or energy?

An opening: “Something in me is no longer willing to…”
